How do you train a generative adversarial network?

Alternate discriminator or critic updates with generator updates using a versioned dataset, explicit objectives, checkpoints and evaluation. Start with a reproducible non-saturating baseline, inspect gradients and held-out behaviour, and add one technique only when it addresses a measured failure.

Why is GAN training unstable?

The generator and discriminator optimise against a moving opponent in a non-convex game. Poor gradient signal, mismatched learning speeds, discriminator overfitting, numerical problems and inadequate data can each create oscillation, divergence or collapse.

What are improved techniques for training GANs?

Established options include the non-saturating generator loss, feature matching, spectral normalization, WGAN-GP, separate generator and discriminator learning rates, and data-efficient augmentation such as ADA or DiffAugment. The right choice depends on the diagnosed failure mode.

How can mode collapse be detected?

Inspect fresh and fixed-latent samples, class or attribute coverage, precision-recall style measures, pairwise diversity and nearest training neighbours across checkpoints. A single visual grid or aggregate score can miss partial collapse.

Should the discriminator and generator have the same learning rate?

Not necessarily. TTUR research supports separate learning rates, but there is no universal ratio. Compare several justified settings across multiple seeds while holding data, architecture, compute and evaluation constant.

Is WGAN-GP always better than a standard GAN?

No. WGAN-GP can improve stability in some settings, but it changes the full objective and adds gradient-penalty cost. Compare it with a clean non-saturating baseline on the target data and retain it only when repeated evidence improves the required outcomes.
