Who should own retail facial recognition?

A named business owner should be accountable for the outcome, with explicit technical, privacy, security and operations owners and clear authority to suspend processing.

What evidence should vendors provide?

Require mode-specific accuracy, demographic and image-quality results, gallery-scale testing, security and deletion evidence, model versioning, subprocessor details and operational references.

How should watchlists be controlled?

Every entry needs evidence, source, approval, category, expiry, review and a correction or removal route. Block informal uploads and audit all changes.

Can staff act on a facial-recognition match alone?

They should not. A candidate needs defined human review and corroboration before adverse action, with reasons recorded and escalation for consequential decisions.

Which metrics matter after launch?

Track business outcomes, false alerts, missed events where measurable, interventions, overrides, complaints, rights requests, disparities, retention failures, security events and total operating cost.

What changes require retesting?

Model versions, thresholds, cameras, lighting, store layouts, gallery sources, response policies and new purposes can invalidate previous evidence and should trigger controlled review.

What should an exit plan contain?

Include technical shutdown, access revocation, data and backup deletion, subprocessor confirmation, audit export, contract duties, fallback operations and customer communication.
