What is a rule-based decision system?

It is software that applies explicit conditions to validated facts and returns a decision, reason code or action. A production system also needs a decision contract, rule ownership, testing, versions, approvals, monitoring and exception handling.

When should a business use rule-based decisioning?

Use it when policy can be stated explicitly, outcomes must be traceable, changes need review and the input space is bounded enough to test. Perception-heavy or open-ended tasks usually need another method or a governed hybrid.

What is a decision table?

A decision table represents related conditions and outputs in rows and columns. Each row forms a rule, while a declared hit policy explains what happens when zero, one or several rows match.

How are business rules different from application code?

Business rules express changeable policy. Application code handles authentication, data access, workflow, interfaces and infrastructure. Separating them can improve traceability, but their schemas and releases still require coordinated versioning.

How should rule changes be tested?

Test each rule and boundary, analyse table gaps and overlaps, run complete scenarios, compare old and candidate rulesets on frozen cases, assert safety invariants and verify latency, failure and rollback behaviour.

Can rule-based decisions be combined with machine learning?

Yes. A model may estimate a signal while rules constrain how it is used. The model requires validation, calibration and drift monitoring, and the combined decision still needs explanations, human escalation and outcome monitoring.
