What is the biggest ethical issue in data mining?

There is no universal single issue, but hidden secondary use is foundational because it can undermine consent, purpose limitation, fairness and trust at the same time.

How can data mining invade privacy?

It can combine records, infer sensitive traits, identify people from indirect attributes or expose small-group patterns beyond what individuals reasonably expected.

Why is bias a data mining problem?

Datasets, labels, features and deployment policies can reflect unequal history or coverage, causing error rates or outcomes to differ across relevant groups.

Can public data create ethical issues?

Yes. Aggregation, scale, permanence and high-impact reuse can violate expectations or create harm even when individual records were publicly visible.

What is purpose creep in data mining?

Purpose creep is the gradual reuse of data or analytical outputs for decisions beyond the specific purpose originally justified and communicated.

How does re-identification happen?

A person can be singled out by linking supposedly anonymous attributes with external information or by querying granular data repeatedly.

How should an organisation respond to an ethical issue?

Document the harm and affected groups, contain the use, investigate evidence, correct data or controls, notify where required and reassess whether operation should resume.
