What are ethical data mining practices?

They are documented controls that limit data mining to a legitimate purpose, minimise data, protect privacy and security, test fairness, explain outcomes, support challenges and monitor real-world effects.

Is anonymised data always safe to mine?

No. Individuals may sometimes be re-identified by combining attributes or external datasets. Anonymisation should be tested and supported by access, query and disclosure controls.

Does consent make every data mining use ethical?

No. Consent may be invalid, overly broad or disconnected from later uses. Necessity, fairness, proportionality, security and the ability to withdraw or challenge also matter.

How can a company reduce bias in data mining?

Define relevant groups and harms, inspect data and labels, test error rates and outcomes by slice, examine proxy variables and document trade-offs and remediation.

Who should own ethical data mining governance?

A named business owner should be accountable, supported by data, privacy, security, legal, risk and affected-domain expertise. High-risk uses benefit from independent review.

How often should a data mining project be reviewed?

Review before release, on material changes and at risk-based intervals. Complaints, drift, new data, expanded uses or adverse outcomes should trigger an immediate reassessment.

Is ethical data mining the same as legal compliance?

No. Legal requirements are essential, but ethical review also addresses foreseeable harm, power imbalances, social expectations and uses that may be lawful yet disproportionate.
