What is a data mining ethics assessment?

It is a documented review of a specific analytical use, covering purpose, affected people, data rights, necessity, fairness, privacy, security, transparency and accountability.

Who should participate in the assessment?

Include the accountable business owner plus analytics, privacy, security, legal, risk and domain expertise. High-impact uses should include independent and affected-stakeholder perspectives.

Is an ethics assessment the same as a privacy impact assessment?

No. They can share evidence, but an ethics assessment also considers power, fairness, autonomy, downstream effects and harms beyond personal-data privacy.

Can a project be approved only as a pilot?

Yes. A bounded pilot is appropriate when assumptions require real-world evidence and has population limits, human oversight, stop thresholds and an expiry date.

What evidence should reviewers require?

Require data provenance, permissions, quality and fairness results, privacy and security analysis, user explanations, redress design, named ownership and measurable monitoring conditions.

When should the assessment be repeated?

Repeat it after material changes to purpose, data, model, threshold, population, geography, supplier or downstream action, and when monitoring reveals unexpected harm.

What should automatically block release?

Examples include unknown data rights, no accountable owner, uncontrolled sensitive inference, inadequate security or no meaningful review path for a consequential decision.
