What is object detection in simple terms?

Object detection identifies separate objects in an image or video and returns their categories and locations, usually as confidence-scored bounding boxes.

Is object detection the same as image recognition?

Image recognition is a broad term. Classification identifies what an image contains, while object detection also locates each predicted instance.

What are bounding boxes?

Bounding boxes are rectangles that estimate where objects appear. They are commonly stored as two corners or as a centre coordinate with width and height.

What is confidence in object detection?

Confidence is a model score used to rank or filter predictions. It should not be treated as a calibrated probability unless calibration has been tested.

What does IoU measure?

Intersection over union measures overlap between a predicted box and a labelled box by dividing their intersection area by their union area.

Mean average precision summarizes precision-recall performance across classes and, depending on the evaluation protocol, across one or more localization thresholds.

Does a high mAP guarantee production success?

No. Production success also depends on representative data, per-class errors, latency, hardware, workflow design, monitoring and the business cost of mistakes.

What should a beginner learn next?

Learn annotation rules, leakage-resistant data splitting, transfer learning, precision-recall analysis and target-hardware testing before optimizing complex architectures.
