Can I build an object detector with a small dataset?

A narrow pilot can begin with a modest representative dataset and pretrained weights. Required volume depends on visual variability, class ambiguity and the cost of errors, so test learning curves rather than relying on a universal number.

Which annotation format should I use?

Use a versioned format supported by the training and review tools, such as COCO JSON. More important than the format is a consistent taxonomy, documented box rules and validated conversions.

Should I train a detector from scratch?

Most first projects should benchmark transfer learning from maintained pretrained weights. Training from scratch usually requires substantially more data, compute and validation.

How should I split object-detection data?

Group related frames, devices, sites or capture sessions before splitting so near-duplicates cannot leak across training and evaluation. Align holdouts with the generalization the project requires.

Which metrics should decide whether the prototype passes?

Use per-class precision, recall and AP plus workload-specific thresholds, hard-condition slices, end-to-end latency, false alerts, missed critical events and reviewer capacity.

When is an object detector ready for production?

It is ready only when data, quality, hardware, security, fallback, monitoring, ownership and business-outcome criteria all pass in a representative pilot.

What is the next step after a first baseline?

Perform structured error analysis, then improve the highest-cost failure with targeted data, clearer labels, calibrated thresholds or a justified architecture change.
